Ngozi Ossai - Architect | Sustainable Design Advocate I am an innovative architect with a strong foundation in sustainable building practices, deeply committed to creating spaces that not only enhance the human experience but also harmonize with the natural environment. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Benin, where my passion for design excellence propelled me to become the top student in my department, receiving recognition for achieving the highest score in the design studio. With professional experience working for the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and a variety of private sector projects, I have developed a robust skill set in building design, 3D visualization, and technical detailing. Notably, I have been involved in the remodeling and design of oil mill factories, staff quarters, and residential estates. My commitment to addressing challenges in design led me to contribute to correcting irregularities on site, ensuring projects are delivered safely and efficiently. A turning point in my career came when I ventured into interior design, gaining firsthand experience in material sourcing and witnessing how Afrocentric design elements can coexist harmoniously with modern aesthetics. This exposure strengthened my interest in sustainable and culturally responsive architecture, blending local materials and practices with cutting-edge design principles. Currently, I am working on a groundbreaking Personal project titled “Ile Efo” (Green House), where I am exploring the potential of water hyacinth, a problematic plant in Nigeria’s riverine regions, to create eco-friendly housing solutions. This innovative approach uses waste materials to construct sustainable, livable spaces while addressing environmental issues, which reflects my belief that architecture should be a tool for positive environmental impact. I have always been drawn to the relationship between architecture and the natural environment, which is why I actively participate in environmental conservation efforts. I volunteer with LEAP Africa, where I engage in beach clean-ups and educate communities about sustainability. I have also represented Nigeria at the Future of Sustainability Conference in South Africa. My work is driven by a commitment to creating sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, and functional spaces. I am passionate about utilizing technological innovations, biomaterials, and sustainable design practices to shape the future of architecture. In the coming years, I hope to deepen my expertise in sustainable design and contribute to groundbreaking research and projects that address both environmental and societal challenges.
